during the current month. Meanwhile, as long ago as June,

1891, the Acting Harbour Master had pointed out that the

magazine on One Tree Island was in competition with the

Government Depot, while the Military objection to the

situation of the Magazine on One Tree Island did not lose

its strength by lapse of time. A new Government Depot has

now been built at considerable expense and therefore both

on Military and financial reasons I decided not to renew

this lease, which was given to Messrs. Nobel and Company

on exceptionally liberal terms in order to encourage their

trade. The firm has now had 20 years in which to recoup

their original outlay, and to renew the lease would give

them an unfair advantage as against their rivals in the

business.
